A woman ahead of her time; Anna May Wong was Hollywood’s first Chinese American movie star. For all her talent, wit, and charm, she’s spent her life searching for a place to belong. She was discriminated against by American society for her race, and demeaned by her family for her dreams. It seemed the only place where she was beyond her circumstances was in the magical world of film and acting, if only Hollywood could’ve seen her beyond racist stereotypes and caricatures. From rumored sapphic romances to traveling different countries to lifelong friendships with fellow legendary artists, Anna will defy all the odds as she devotes herself to her craft. Only one question remains: will there ever be a place where she can be seen as human?

🏳️‍🌈
Pride Month Affirmation #7: Look how many events are in this newsletter. This isn't even everything; I'm one person browsing Instagram, and there are so many events that slip through the cracks. Trans people are everywhere. We are performing and creating and making ourselves beautiful and visible. I'm extremely proud of us, and I can't wait to celebrate Pride with my trans family.

Sending a special congradulations and thanks to:

  • Lil' Park Drag Show for all their performances this month, and for performing as part of NYC Pridefest. They're doing incredible work and I'm so proud to have their events in this newsletter.
  • The Queerly Festival & Jimmy Lovett for submitting so many events this month and for highlighting trans art as part of this wonderful festival.
  • My choir, TRANScend, for a wonderful Pride Concert, and for our killer sets at SHAG in Connecticut (even though Orville Peck called out sick and was replaced by CeeLo Green - true story).
